The Happy Song

Here's Chris Tomlin singing "The Happy Song" which gets my vote for the worst worship song of recent years.

I like Chris Tomlin. I don't like "The Happy Song".

First of all, it's not really a worship song. It's mostly about "me" and how happy I am and how my heart is bursting. Me, me, me.

Secondly, who says Christians are supposed to be happy all the time?

Yes, we can be joyful always. But, no, not happy always. Different emotions.

This song is actually really fun in settings with lots of little kids, getting to clap and dance around - I know this, because I first learned it when I worked at camp, and it was one of my favorite songs...so fun! :)

..I've never thought it worked so well as a song during a regular church service. Maybe because we often end up singing it on days when unhappy things are going on (which seem to happen alot more when you are a grown-up & have a lot more on your plate!), and as you mentioned, being "joyful" is not the same as being "happy". I always feel like I"m supposed to paste a big fat fake smile on my face when I sing it, no matter how I"m really feeling -- but if I'm not feeling happy (which isn't a sin!), I don't think that's worshipping in spirit & truth!

But, of course, if everyone really IS feeling happy, then it can be a fun song. :)

I forgot to say that I think it is a perfectly fine camp song or Sunday school song.

You know, you've got, "If You're Happy and You Know It'(or "If your SAVED and You Know It" for all of you who didn't grow up Methodist like me), "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" (yep, I learned that one in Sunday School!), and "Father Abraham" so why not throw in The Happy Song~

In fact, I'll give it my vote for best song of that bunch!

I was just voting on "worship" songs.
